NEWS FROM THE CITY OF OAKLAND

Alameda County COVID-19 Update
This week, the Centers for Disease Control's Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices (ACIP) approved the Pfizer vaccine for individuals age 12 to 15. The age expansion is welcome news in Alameda County where more than half of our residents age 16 and older are fully vaccinated. The approval will help further vaccination across our community, and help us stay on the path of reopening.

Want a vaccine but not sure where to go? Vaccines are widely available, convenient, and FREE in Alameda County.
Return of ‘Bulky Block Party’ Events for Residents to Get Rid of Bulky Junk for Free

Oakland residents will once again get to safely and legally dispose of large unwanted items at a free drop-off event series known as the Bulky Block Party, the City announced Thursday.

Piloted in 2018 and expanded to a monthly service, the popular Bulky Block Party events had drawn hundreds of residents each month. The events were suspended in March 2020 due to pandemic safety concerns, and with safer practices and circumstances in place, the City is thrilled to offer them once again.

The Bulky Block Party events will occur at a City facility located at 7101 Edgewater Drive in East Oakland. The first event will be held on Saturday, May 22, from 9:00am to 1:00pm. After that, events will be held monthly on the last Saturday of the month, starting June 26, from 9:00am-1:00pm at the same location. The events are open to all Oakland residents.

City of Oakland Eviction Moratorium Not Impacted by Federal Ruling
A recent federal court ruling regarding the nationwide eviction moratorium adopted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not change the City of Oakland’s current eviction and rent increase moratorium, which remains in effect during the COVID emergency and until rescinded by the Oakland City Council.

RAP, a division of the City’s Housing & Community Development Department, reminds tenants and property owners to always ask before you act – contact a housing counselor with questions about the eviction moratorium and all other housing matters. Call (510) 238-3721 or visit: oaklandca.gov/rap

New Restaurant Revitalization Fund Now Open
The American Rescue Plan Act established the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) to provide funding to help restaurants and other eligible businesses keep their doors open. This program will provide restaurants with funding equal to their pandemic-related revenue loss up to $10 million per business and no more than $5 million per physical location. Recipients are not required to repay the funding as long as funds are used for eligible uses no later than March 11, 2023.

Deadline for Poet Laureate Nominations is May 19
There’s less than a week left to submit your nomination for the new Oakland Poet Laureate. The program’s primary goal is to make poetry more accessible across Oakland, while promoting an understanding of the transformative power of the art form. Nominations are being accepted online at: https://bit.ly/2Q98ZT9.

Business Recovery Survey
The City’s Economic & Workforce Development Department is proactively developing an economic recovery plan to assist small businesses in reopening and thriving as we move through the COVID-19 pandemic.

To be successful, economic development strategies and plans must be built through public contributions, feedback and buy-in from people like you. After gathering community feedback, we will report on the information captured and deliver a final economic recovery plan in Summer 2021.
